US$ 200 million needed to restore Mount Coffee hydro plant

A one-day interactive Energy donors and partners Conference has taken place in Monrovia.

The event highlighted the rehabilitation and resurrection of the Mount Coffee hydro plant and development of the St. Paul River Basin.

Lands, Mine and Energy Minister, Eugene Shannon said the gathering afforded Liberia the opportunity to respond to the infrastructural demand of electricity.

He said the conference was also geared at finding out the possibility of resurrecting the Mount

Coffee Hydro plant.

Minister Shannon said the 64 mega watts previously put out by the Mount Coffee hydro plant will need to be increased to about 1000 watts.

He said this can be achieved through the development of the entire St. Paul River Basin.

Minister Shannon put the cost of the expansion project of the entire St. Paul River Basin at about one billion US dollars.

According to him, the Mount Coffee Hydro plant rehabilitation project will cost about 200 million US dollars to complete.

The conference was hosted by the Lands, Mines and Energy Ministry in collaboration with the West Africa Power Pool.

Also speaking, Vice- President Joseph Boakai said government was keen in constructing the Mount Coffee Hydro and develop the entire St. Paul River Basin.
