Senator Isaac Nyenabo of Grand Gedeh County has categorically accused President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of breaching the 2011 National Defense Law, which calls for the dissolution of the Ministry of National Security and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
Despite the law, President Sirleaf recently appointed Mr. Al Karley as Director of the National Bureau of Investigation. Senator Nyenabo said the two institutions had earlier been ear marked for disbanding by the government.
He said series of consultations were held with stakeholders, including the involvement of expert opinions, which led to the successful passage of the act into law and subsequently printed into hand bill.
Nyenabo, a former President Pro-tempore of the Liberian Senate, said the President has willfully infringed on the National Defense Law, and termed the action as disrespect to the Legislature and the people of Liberia in general.
Speaking Tuesday at their first sitting in plenary after a two- week Easter Break, the Grand Gedeh County lawmaker said the action by the President should not be taken lightly as it has the propensity to undermine the work of the first branch of the government.
He said the action has sent a wrongful and terrifying signal that an elected Chief Executive could discharge her constitutional functions in such manner and form.
Senator Nyenabo was however halted by Margibi County Senator Oscar Cooper, who noted that Nyenabo being a member of the Committee on Defense, should address his grievances to the committee.
